A number of organisations working with therapy dog has sent some of their brightest dogs to Las Vegas to meet and comfort the victims of the mass shooting that took the lives of 58 people and left 480 others injured at the Route 91 Harvest music festival 10 days ago.
The effect of the therapy dogs has been overwhelming. Many of the survivors, like Michael Caster, lay in their hospital bed, unable to move or feel certain parts of their body that had been shot. In Michael’s case, he doesn’t know if he will ever walk again, so when the golden retriever Lois from LLC K-9 Comfort Dogs rested his head on his lap, he suddenly forgot his worries for a little while. It’s just a lovely moment of comfort and piece when an innocent creature gives unconditional love and warmth.
The dogs help bring comfort to not only people who are suffering physically, but also people who are emotionally hurting and traumatised by the events that took place. The 17 golden retrievers from LLC K-9 Comfort Dogs spent a week in the area, walked around the city and met hundreds of people who hugged them in silence.
Therapy dogs have proved to be an amazing way to deal with stress, trauma and mass tragedies. Even a short interaction with one of these dogs can lower your heartbeat and help you deal with anxiety and stress.
